You do not need a brush, if your rotor has permanent magnets, which can be drawn on the fixed coils. The output is AC, but of course it is very easy to convert direct current by rectifiers. Google "homemade brushless motor"

Carbon brushes used in DC motors. if you want AC motor, the use of cage-rotor with slip rings at the start.

Coals are sustainable and do not heat up as fast as other materials. Carbons are usually the ideal choice!

In response to this question, I can only think of another question. What other material that would have the driver and corresponds to the attributes of carbon?

The carbon brushes in general has been proven to be very effective when the engine design. They last a long time and not expensive to find a reason for the wide dissemination.
